Description
INTRODUCTION It has been reported that the asthmatic patients have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders due to direct involvement of common inflammatory mediators, which play a role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance (1). This increased risk is likely to be associated with obesity, particularly with abdominal obesity (2, 3). Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of cardiometabolic risk factors characterized by abdominal obesity, insulin resistance and chronic inflammation (4). It has been reported that asthma-like symptoms such as dyspnoea at rest or exercise-induced dyspnoea are common in patients with MetS, and their pulmonary functions are lower compared to the subjects with no asthma-like symptoms (5, 6). The present study tested the hypothesis that the prevalence of MetS would be higher in asthma patients due to abdominal obesity, insulin resistance and chronic inflammation. Based on this, the prevalence of MetS in asthma patients and the relationship between cardiometabolic risk factors and asthma were compared.
